This dynamic and very demanding hiking trail will take you across the attractive areas of the south and southwest slopes of Mt. Krn where you will be able to enjoy in wonderful views along the steep ascent.
Mt. Matajur is a boundary mountain between the Republic of Slovenia and Italy. It is a wonderful sightseeing mountain and a genuine botanical garden during the spring and summer months. Because it is possible to make a circular tour, it is an attractive destination for many hikers.
You will certainly experience something new along the ascent to one of the finest Slovenian summits. At the same time, more demanding hikers can also take this tour as an excellent training opportunity.
Looking from the valley, this hill appears like a mighty rocky pyramid with splendid views. Along the trail you come across various remnants of World War I. You can shorten the ascent by driving to the Zapleč Mountain pasture.
This circular tour starts with the visit of the still working Kofol Mill in the village of Gabrje. It is routed along the ravine and waterfalls of the Sopotnica Stream. The Grofova voda spring provides excellent refreshment after you overcome the steep ascent.
Mt. Maselnik is located at the beginning of the mountain chain surrounding the lake in the Lužnica Valley. The prominent summit of this mountain offers splendid views of the Soča Valley, Julian Alps and all the way to the Dolomites Mountain range if the visibility is good.
Combine the visit of the Zaprikraj Mountain pasture with a visit of the Zaprikraj Outdoor museum. The circular tour along the outdoor museum is routed along the trenches, caverns and artillery positions, and past the remnants of the military barracks and a bunker.
