A hike from Trnovačko Jezero to Buško Jezero. From the Montenegran border to Croatian border along BiH's beautiful mountainranges and National Parks. #mustsee #dontmiss ;-) Perućica, Sutjeska, Zelengora, Treskavica, Visočica, Bjelašnica, Rakitnica, Prenj, Čvrsnica, Blidinje, Vran and Svinjar. This is what I hiked, so it includes all the wrong turns I took AND the parts where I lost the trail... But I thought it might be useful in order to see where future Via Dinarica hikers might pay a bit more attention. (My waypoints will follow soon)

Highlights definetely are Dinara, Crnopac, Paklenica, Velebit, Samarske Stijene and Risnjak. This is the route I hiked. Yes, I skipped some parts of the original Via Dinarica hiking trail and choose to walk the bikingroutes instead. In Croatia the White Trail is not officially ¨open¨ yet, they (Via Dinarica HR team) actually suggested me to hike the ¨pearls, flowers or highlights¨ and use public transport in between. Getting the right bus to the right place was such a hassle that walking on the roads (good views all the way) was much easier.  There is one part where I got a ride. From Knin to Gračac is very busy road, in my opinion not safe to hike. The hiking trail is also not completely safe, since it is still a mine suspected area. According to the experience of another hiker who tried to follow the original GPS track, it was impossible to get through the wilderness (and he got chasen by a mad dog)... I wanted to hike from Snežnik in Croatia to Snežnik in Slovenia, but that's not an official bordercrossing. So I went to Rupa where I continued via Ilirska Bistrica to Mašun and Sviščakih (see my Slovenian tours). This is an alternative route that starts from Risnjak. I avoided the parts where the hiking trails are not maintained at all, but again, I walked quite a lot of asphalt. Which I again actually liked. Quiet, scenic roads through these typical rural areas which people might call ¨less developed¨, but in my opinion have more soul than the touristic coast villages..  It is possible to hike more hiking trails and include some peaks from Risnjak to Rupa, I suggest to be creative :)

Klek is an imposing mountain at the eastern edge of Velika Kapela, above the city of Ogulin. Even though Klek is neither high nor large in surface, it is nevertheless one of the most attractive and the most popular hiking destinations in Croatia. Its ridge 3 to 4 kilometers long is characterized by steep sides, and extends in the northwest to southeast direction. The slopes of Klek are covered in forest from the base of the mountain to the elevation of 1000 meters, with several large meadows at the base. However, regardless of the route of approach to Klek, the attention of visitors will primarily be drawn by the 200 meters tall rocky head of the mountain. The rocks at the top are partially vertical, or even hanging, so Klek is also a popular rock climbing destination. When observed from the south, Klek resembles a sleeping giant – the rocks of Klečice his feet, and the peak rock his head. Klek and Ogulin have played an important role in the history of mountaineering and rock climbing in Croatia.

Via Dinarica HR-W-17 Nacionalni park Paklenica by Thibault

Beautiful stage with impressive views on the Adriatic, Velebit mountains and the countryside. I took a shortcut towards Gračac after Sveto Brdo, that connects with the next VD stage. Slept in Dušice hut (a few km east of Sv. Brdo), well-maintained and equipped. There is a water cave 10min from the hut, next to the trail at Jurjevića Stanovi (a map shows indications in the hut) - better to boil water though.

Via Dinarica HR-W-16 Southern Velebit (III) – route to Struge by Laurie
August 01, 2022 · Community
Lovely section. Great water source (well with bucket) and potential for camping at Velika Gospa. From there a pretty epic but nice climb to Struge Hut. stayed there overnight and met some lovely Croatians. Hut a little dirty and had some rodents but was fine for us - just keep your food somewhere it can't be eaten!! No water there but 29 minutes up the track is again a great well which is full with lovely fresh water - enjoy. Route well marked and although steep towards the hut is very manageable. Enjoy!
