The steep and rocky ascent to the Kreuzspitze involves light climbing and will reward your endeavours with the best views in the whole of the Ammergau Alps.
This climb is the shortest route to the summit of the Kreuzspitze (2185 metres), the highest mountain in the Bavarian part of the Ammergau Alps. Proceeding via a rocky river bed, you will pass the site where the "Hunding Hut" once stood. This was erected by King Ludwig II in 1876. Having twice fallen victim to fire, in 1990 it was rebuilt in the park at Linderhof Palace where it can still be admired today. The further ascent is steep and difficult. The narrow ridge of the Schwarzenkopf is very impressive and requires a head for heights. After an easy climb and having crossed the short summit ridge, you will reach the summit of the Kreuzspitze. This is one of the most spectacular mountain tours in the Ammergau Alps, but requires a good level of fitness, alpine experience and absolute sureness of foot.

From Ammerwaldstraße bei den sieben Quellen (car park), proceed left over the debris flow of the Neualm stream and then up onto the dried river bed, from where a path leads off to the left. This takes you onto a steep path which wends its way up through the mountain forest into the Hochgrieß corrie. You pass a refuge hut and then proceed onto the ridge at the Schwarzenkopf. Following this small ridge traverse, you continue through mountain pines up to the summit area of the Kreuzspitze. It is now time for the most strenuous part of this mountain tour. You clamber up towards the summit of the Kreuzspitze over slabs of rock and loose stone. You will have to use your hands in many places, although you will not need to undertake any full climbing. Further up, the terrain flattens out once more. You are now nearly at your destination. The final metres up to the summit are via a flat pathway. You will then enjoy fabulous views of the Ammergau Alps, of the Lechtal Alps and of the Wettersteinblock with Lake Eibsee Lake in the foreground. Return down into the valley via the identical route taken for the ascent.
