Mountain bikers taking a break in Leivonmäki National Park
Mountain bike rides in Finland
Finland, with its untouched nature and wilderness, is predestined for mountain bike adventures. Steep climbs up to the fells in Lapland, over roots in the wooded national parks and over wooden planks in the moorland areas – Finland offers varied routes for bikers of all levels of difficulty.
Mountain biking in the national parks
The Finnish national parks are particularly beautiful. Nature is specially protected here and is therefore very original. On the lonely stretches, you have to follow the guidelines and stay on the marked paths to cause no damage to the beautiful landscape. With the mountain bike, you can reach lonely and wild places, which you cannot come by otherwise.
Mountain bike paradise Lapland
Mountain bikers are mainly on the road in Lapland because the untouched wilderness and the incredible expanse attract adventurous cyclists. In winter, you are well-advised to rent a fat bike. With these special bikes, you can also explore the snow-covered landscape. In Lapland, both in summer and winter, you can go on the trails alone or join a guided tour with experienced guides who know the area better than anyone else.
On Ylläs Fell you can get your heart pumping and Ylläs Bike Park is not just for advanced bikers but also beginners. On the border between the Finnish Lake District and Lapland, you will find a biking paradise with the fells Iso-Syöte and Pikku-Syöte. The trails are suitable for those who have no problem carrying the bike over streams and steeper climbs. From bare rock to sandy soils and old forests with root paths as well as gravel paths and marshy areas, you will find all different kinds of surfaces for perfect technique training.
Finnish Lapland is known for hosting several annual mountain bike events that attract not just the locals. The Ylläs-Levi MTB race takes the participants through the wilderness of Lapland with Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. In Pyhä and Luosto there is a festival for adventurous riders as well as families that takes the mountain bikers over a total distance of 140 km and in the Ruka Mountain competition, you can choose between 20 km, 40 km and 60 km long racecourses.
