Long-distance hikes in North Rhine-Westphalia

The Wupper Trail takes us mostly along the course of the river Wupper. We experience nature and culture of a special kind.

On varied paths, the Rheinsteig leads through the narrow valleys of the Rhine. Between Bonn, Koblenz and Wiesbaden there are spectacular views of the culture and landscape of the Rhine valley.

The European Long Distance Trail E8 runs from Dursey Head in Ireland across the sea to England and then crosses the European mainland almost diagonally to the Polish-Ukrainian border. It currently measures around 4390 km and is to be extended to the Black Sea in the future. In Germany, we walk along the E8 from the Dutch border near Nijmegen to Oberkappel in the German-Austrian border region.

Formerly signposted as the "Rheinhöhenweg", the route takes us on the left bank of the Rhine from Bonn's Godesburg Castle over the heights of the Middle Rhine Valley to Bingen and along the edge of the Rhine-Hessian hills via Mainz to our destination of Oppenheim am Rhein.

The Eifelsteig, designed according to the quality criteria of the German Hiking Seal, takes us from Aachen to Trier. Along the way, we cross the Eifel along beautiful and scenic paths.

The Briloner Kammweg is often referred to as a quality path and leads to 49 km through breathtaking landscapes of Brilon.

The trail continues along winding paths through the colourful mixed forest climbing up to the Kuckuckslay. The shelter encourages you to rest awhile and admire the beautiful view of the half-timbered village of Olef, the historic village centre of which you will pass through after a short descent. A little further on, abandoned ore mines and prospects are testament to the region's former mining history. After Golbach, the Eifel countryside opens up and, far away across the expansive fields, hikers will catch their first glimpse of the Basilica in Steinfeld.

The German section of the European long-distance hiking trail E1 runs well signposted once across Germany – from Flensburg in the north to Konstanz in the south.

Es geht hinauf und hinab, auf hohe Bergkuppen, durch tiefe Täler, entlang hochgewachsener Hecken oder durch die offene Landschaft – auf dieser Etappe zwischen Monschau und Einruhr wird pure Abwechslung geboten.
