Long-distance hikes in Guarda

Spanning 55.7 km, Irrigating Cova da Beira is the second of nine sectors that make up GRZ. It connects the Valhelhas rest area, in the municipality of Guarda, to the Barco rest area, in the municipality of Covilhã. 

The oldest long distance route of Portugal and freshly certified as "Best of Europe" !

The Multistage Route of Zêzere (GRZ) begins at the spectacular Zêzere Glacial Valley, a scenery of indescribable beauty.

Departing from Manteigas, the section of GRZ continues on the right bank of the Zêzere on a balcony path between beeches and oaks, surrounded by spectacular landscapes.

With about 8km, this stretch of GRZ starts at the Fluvial Beach of Valhelhas, in the municipality of Guarda, and ends in Vale Formoso, in the municipality of Covilhã.

Not far from where the municipality of Guarda starts, this alternative crosses the road and goes up the hillside to come down afterwards among the pine trees towards the centre of Valhelhas.

The GRZ- Multistage Route of Zêzere was designed to be done on foot, by bicycle or by canoe, with 13 Intermodal Stations along the route. It passes through 13 municipalities and connects the Estrela Mountain, the Aldeias do Xisto, Castelo de Bode and the river Tagus.

Spanning 30 km, the Wild Start is the first of nine stages that make up the GRZ. It connects Covão d'Ametade to the Valhelhas rest area.

The GRZ continues along an old track running parallel to the EN 232, beside the river on the side where the fields are. It takes you to Ribeira de Beijames and climbs towards the Fluvial Beach of Valhelhas. This stage is closed.  You should follow the asphalt road until the beginning of the variant Stage GR 33 - 3.1
