The bicycle tour in the cultural landscape of Lake Lohja will take you on an amazing adventure. Lake Lohja is the largest lake in southern Finland. You will explore the captivating nature, feel the soothing effect of a tranquil environment and enjoy clean lakewater. You get to know the fascinating history of Southern Finland only an hour’s drive from Helsinki. The cycle route leads you through fields, apple gardens and herb-rich forests all the way to the mystical oak tree of Paavola. On the way you can enjoy local food made from fresh ingredients or pick berries from the woods. Finnish people love to pick superfood from the forest! Find a sauna and get e.g. a peat treatment and swim in natural waters. You will feel like a newborn after that.

When riding your bike you can see how the old ironworks culture meets the lively modern villages. In the iron foundry villages you can enjoy various cultural and musical events. In Fiskars you can have a deeper look into world famous Finnish design. The intense silence and the mystery of light-filled summer nights, when the sun does not set until midnight, will help you to understand why especially Finnish artists and influencers have enjoyed the surroundings of Lake Lohja.

Lake Lohja offers a very attractive cycling route very close to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, only an hour's drive from Helsinki. The area is full of old ironworks, robust stone churches, castles and lively villages. You can enjoy the beauty of fields that have been cultivated for centuries. Cyclists can admire cultural sights in rural aristocratic landscapes, rugged ridges and clear waters. A favourable climate and fertile soil have given the region an exceptionally beautiful natural landscape, providing a wonderful break from everyday stress.

Author's recommendation

Traversing the whole route while admiring the many interesting sights along the way takes several days. There are numerous charming accommodation options along the way, and the pride of this part of Uusimaa – delicious local food – is served in many places on the route. Book you accomodation in advance!

Book your boat trip from Lohjansaari to Karjalohja in advance! You can take your bicycles and your luggage on board.

Learn about  everyman's rights; you can freely pick for example berries in a forest as long as you are not stepping to someones backyard. It is the Finnish code of conduct in the natural surrounding.

Safety information

You mostly cycle on a quiet country road, but watch out for the traffic!

Wear a cycling helmet for your own safety.

Take some food and enough water with you.

If you make an open fire, make sure it is totally extinguished before you leave.

Equipment

Take warm and water-proof cycling clothes with you, as the weather conditions may change quickly.

Take maintenance tools for your bicycle - and study how to use them. Moblile network is available through the cycling tour, and you'll be able to call for help. Still, it is a good idea to learn how to patch the bike tyre for a long cycling tour.

 Route description

The journey begins from Kirkkonummi railway station, towards one of the most famous and attractive sights in this area, Hvitträsk. The route follows pretty countryside roads through an idyllic landscape dotted with lakes. From Hvitträsk you take an easy and beautiful route towards Siuntio, a small town with stone churches and mansions.

From Siuntio you cycle to Lohja town, where you can visit the Tyryri mine museum to explore the roots of mining industry in Finland. From there you continue the journey alongside the lakeshore to Lohjansaari island.

Enjoy the silence and the healing power of clean nature at Lohjansaari Island. From there you take a boat transfer to Karjalohja from where you continue riding towards the old ironworks area. You can get off the bike and explore the ironworks in Antskog and after that you will arrive at Fiskars Village. In Fiskars you can see how the old culture meets art and culinary delights. After spending nice time in Fiskars you continue to ride towards Tammisaari, a picturesque small coastal town.

When leaving Tammisaari you pedal to Snappertuna to see the medieval castle of Raasepori and from there you continue through the ironworks of Billnäs to Svartå Manor, again another ironworks. From Svartå you will follow the quiet country roads to Ingå and its cosy rural milieu. Finally, you will return to Siuntio, visit Sjundby Manor and then back to your starting point, Kirkkonummi.

There are numerous charming accommodation options along the way, and the pride of this part of Uusimaa – delicious local food – is served in many places on the route.
