what3words

what3words is a really simple way to communicate location. Every 3m square in the world has been given a unique 3 word address that will never change. The order and composition of the words is unique, easy to read, share and use.

It's as simple as this

From now on you can quickly and easily search for what3words addresses on the platform and use them in the route search or route planner. With the compass in the app you can find a what3words address for your current location, share it, or even enter a what3words address in the search field on the map to navigate directly there.

Precise starting point and position

Many places, for example the starting point of a hiking trail, do not have a normal address. With a what3words address, the exact starting point of a route can be specified easily - using just three words. You can now find the corresponding what3words coordinates for each route description under "Turn-by-turn directions" and "Getting there" and can search for them on the map or share them. This also applies to huts, accommodation, destinations and more.

Structure and design

what3words addresses are always constructed in the same way. They consist of three consecutive words in the format ///word.word.word. You can enter the three words either with or without the slashes - but remember to include the full stops to separate each word.

Example: ///flailed.hiss.agreement or flailed.hiss.agreement

The entire map network is defined once, so that the three-word address for a particular location always remains the same, even if buildings and streets are converted and changed.

Currently what3words is available in more than 40 languages.

Good to know

Just like normal street addresses, what3words addresses are in 2D format. Therefore, more information is needed to specify specific heights. For example, if you live in a block of flats, you would use the what3words address for the entrance and also specify the floor and flat number.
