Jargon- a quick and simple explanation of our most commonly used terms
Everything to do with routes
Routes: are fully designed trips that contain a lot of detailed information, full directions, photos and sometimes even videos. Routes can be created and published by either yourself or another community member, by a tourism company or, of course, by us.
Plans: are saved outlines of routes that consist of only a title and basic geometry. They do not yet contain any additional information such as descriptions or pictures. Plans themselves cannot be published, but they can be transformed into routes, which you can then publish later on.
Tracks: GPX and KML tracks are geodata you can record and save using, for example, our app. They contain information about waypoints, altitudes and speed.
GPX: is a data format that exchanges GPS data (geodata). You can use our app to record your own GPS data and upload it to our platform to share your route with others. You can also download GPS data for existing routes.
KML: is a standard data format for displaying routes on Google Earth and Google Maps. You can download KML data for existing routes, but please note that these can only be used in Google applications.
Current conditions: These reveal important information about route conditions, hazards or obstacles as well as temporarily closed trails and / or areas plus wider information that could be beneficial to you and others.
Points and waypoints
Points: You can add these to your map to mark your favorite places or special viewpoints. You can name these points, categorize them and add pictures for reference. Only you can see your points, but you can share them with your friends via a link.
Waypoints: are markers along a route that are generally used to denote specific places or tricky junctions. They are used to provide you with relevant information and help navigate you. Particularly beautiful spots can also be highlighted as waypoints, which are then visible to the entire community as soon as the route is published.
Your Profile
My map: This shows you any routes, accommodation or points of interest you have saved. You can view them as a list or as markers on the map itself, helping you to keep stock of what’s important to you.
Clipboard: This is where you can save all of your routes and activities on one board. Multiple routes may be added to the clipboard and sorted into different lists.
Lists: help you organise your saved routes and the destinations you want to go to on your trips. Store your routes on the lists ‘Want to go’, ‘Already done’ or create your very lists based on your own criteria and preferences. Only you can see these, but you are able to share them with others via a link.
Joint Trips: allow you to get in touch with other Outdooractive members to go on trips together. You can either create your own or join an existing one.
Groups: allow you to communicate with like-minded people about common interests and to plan joint trips. Join an existing group or create your own.
Features
3D Flight Videos: enable you to explore the conditions of your route in advance. They are created once, added to your media gallery and uploaded on YouTube. Create videos of your own routes or watch those from other community members.
3D Preview: displays routes and ski areas in 3D. In contrast to 3D flight videos, they are recalculated when accessed and are therefore always up to date to give you the best and most current information before you set out.
Skyline: is an augmented reality feature that scans your surroundings with the camera of your smartphone. It blends in peaks, places, lakes and so on. This not only tells you what you're looking at but helps you orientate yourself a lot better when out and about.
