The Russian Emperor Alexander III visited the Kymijoki estuary in Langinkoski in the late 19th century and fell in love with the scenic beauty of the place. He started to build a summer residence for himself there, which was completed in 1889. At Langinkoski, the imperial family could relax and forget the gilded halls and harsh court etiquette of St Petersburg's Winter Palace. The emperor fished and chopped wood, and the empress cooked. The Russian Emperor Alexander III's fishing lodge in the Langinkoski Nature Reserve is the only building owned by the Emperor that has survived outside Russia's borders.
