Horse-drawn sleigh rides – today and then
A highlight of every winter holiday is a relaxed horse drawn sleigh ride. Just lean back, enjoy the silence and glide over the snow.
A century ago, however, this looked quite different. In rural villages and on hermit farms the work had to go on – even in hard and snowy winters. Whenever normal carriages got stuck, people used horse-drawn sleighs. Wood, hay, straw or even postal deliveries were transported this way. Passenger sledges, however, were usually reserved for the pleasure of the upper class.
Today, sleigh rides are an experience for everyone and especially popular in winter sports destinations. Wrapped in warming furs and blankets, you don't even get cold on the sleigh ride.
By the way: The construction of most sleds has remained the same ever since. They are mostly unsprung and consist of two continuous metal runners instead of wheels.
