From Gruben ascend the forested alpine slopes of the Turtmanntal valley into the high bowl surrounded by the jagged peaks of Pointe de Tourtemagne, Meidspitz and Bella Tola before descending the other side and making your way to Hotel Weisshorn.
Bid ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ to German speaking Switzerand and ‘bonjour’ to French speaking Switzerland. Start the day with an initially steep ascent through woodland, which soon eases off before emerging at Meide, a small group of wooden chalets on the mountainside. Pass the picturesque Chleis Seeroji lake; on a clear day the peaks of the surrounding jagged ridgeline may be reflected in the lake. Climb the basin's edge to gain the Meidpass at 2790 m and after enjoying the views, begin the gradualy descent to Hotel Weisshorn at 2337 m. This historic hotel is the former stomping ground of Victorian-era mountaineers and is a great place to spend the night.
Swat up on the names of the surrounding peaks before you head out to help you make the most of the magnificent view from the top of the Meidpass.
Today’s walk reaches a high point of 2790 m so we advise that you don’t do the route after snow as this will make the high pass difficult to cross. In the early season (end of June early July) the high ground could still retain winter snow – this will likely be soft and easy to cross if you are used to the terrain. If the snow patches are unavoidable or hard (i.e. requiring winter equipment; ice axes and crampons) we advise that you do not do the route if you don’t have the relevant experience or equipment. If in doubt, retrace your steps and take alternative transport to Hotel Weisshorn (public transport/taxi to St.Luc. Cable car/walk up to Hotel Weisshorn from there).
This is a serious mountain hike including altitudes over 2000 m so please bring appropriate clothing – even if it’s a sunny morning the weather can change to rain or thunderstorms in the afternoon. Bring plenty of food and water (at least 2 litres) for the day’s walk, along with waterproofs, warm layers and comfortable sturdy walking boots/shoes. You may also wish to bring poles to help with balance, and the ascents and descents.
Points of Interest
The hotel is situated at 2337 m with excellent views of the Meidpass and the Bella Tola peak. It was built by Francesco Mosoni in 1882, then destroyed by fire in 1889 and rebuilt in 1891. All the material was carried up the mountain by mules, and it’s said that the piano was carried by 6 men.
Way of the Planets
The path is 6 km long in total and tells you about the 9 planets in our solar system. Two separate scales are used: 1 metre to 1 million kilometres for walking distances and 1 cm to 1000 km for the diameters of the planets. Nature lovers can access the path on foot all year round, via St. Luc or Chandolin. Stargazing evenings are organised for the public several times a year and these provide the opportunity of observing the sun and the moon.
Food & Drink
There is nowhere to eat or drink along the route so please bring enough water for the day (at least 2 litres) along with a packed lunch and snacks, which the Hotel Schwartzhorn can provide on request (approx. 10 CHF per pack). They also have a small shop in the reception area where you can buy additional snacks if you wish. When you arrive at Hotel Weisshorn a hearty dinner is included and you can buy refreshments from the bar when you arrive.
