The Stockalperweg (ViaStockalper), a mule track developed more than 300 years ago by Kaspar Stockalper, has been revived as a cultural hiking tail.
The original Stockalper trail between Brig and Gondo was reconstructed in 1991 – 1994 thanks to a donation from the "Ecomuseum" in Simplon. In Stockalper’s footsteps – a historical adventure. Babbling natural brooks, sunny clearings and a fascinating cultural world await you on the historical Stockalper trail. An interesting interplay between rough nature and soft culture accompanies you on your hike along the late mediaeval mule trail. At the same time, you will learn some interesting facts about the intriguing relationship between man and nature. The heighest point of the pass marked by a stone eagle and contrasted with the narrow and wild Zwischbergental (valley) is a wonderful highlight. Kaspar von Stockalper built this historical trail in the late mediaeval times. The successful trader was one of the most powerful characters of the Valais region in the 17th century. His traces and the history of the Simplon in general give the Stockalper trail a unique touch.
