Hiking in Wild Taiga Kuhmo-Suomussalmi

In the Kuhmo and Suomussalmi areas, there are many wonderful hiking routes where you can get to know the local nature at your own pace. Trails can be found for every purpose: through magnificent primeval forests and extensive marshes, along clear-water rivers and streams, by impressive lake landscapes and in diverse nature reserves.

The flat and easily accessible mire conservation areas invite you to feel the atmosphere of the marshlands and their wilderness. The Teerisuo-Lososuo hiking trail takes you through both marshy landscapes and natural primeval forests. In the Säynäjäsuo mire conservation area, the bog area is particularly spacious and impressive for Arctic Lakeland Kainuu and Wild Taiga.

In various nature reserves, you can easily find a place where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and let your mind be at ease. On the Iso-Palonen trail, you can enjoy the benefits of nature and walk along magnificent ridges. The fairly easy-going and clearly marked route around Elimysjärvi leads the hiker across swamps and woodlands.

Alternatively, you can climb on the top of Jauhovaara hill, which is over 250 meters above the sea level and well-known as a scenic viewpoint. The hiking trail to the top is also a nature trail where you can explore the tree species planted in the area. The Särkkäjärvi Ring Route of Kuhmo offers a less challenging ascent, as its trails meander mainly among the pine trees of the recreational forest.

Thanks to the varied terrain of Wild Taiga Kuhmo-Suomussalmi, you can also challenge yourself for longer hiking trips. For example, the Vorlokin kierros trail leads from the top of Tuomivaara hill to the breathtaking Vorlokki gorge and impresses the hikers with its natural forests and rugged scenery. The Atsinki-Pahkakuru-Taivalkoski route, on the other hand, leads to the top of Kivivaara hill, to the Pahkakuru gorge and to the Kylmäperä springs.

Wild Taiga Kuhmo-Suomussalmi is full of opportunities for outdoor activities: hilly landscapes and excellent forest trails create an ideal setting for mountain biking, and the chains of lakes and rivers are perfect for a wide range of canoeing and kayaking trips.
