Hikes in Sonthofen
The 10 Most Beautiful hikes in Sonthofen
Family friendly hiking trails in the valley and along the water
Equally worth seeing is a hike to the Hinanger waterfall south of Sonthofen. It is only a few minutes' walk to this natural spectacle. Those who want to hike further can explore the meadows and forests above the Hinang and Altstädten villages on many beautiful paths. Afterwards, the Sonnenklause restaurant invites you to a cozy stop with a beautiful view of the mountains. Tip: In winter, the ice-covered Hinang waterfall is particularly impressive.
The Wittelsbacher Höhe is full of views. The hill is crowned with a large, solitary linden tree and offers a magnificent view over the peaks of the Allgäu Alps. Over the sunny hills in the southwest of Sonthofen and around Ofterschwang there are many paths that offer beautiful opportunities for small and large hikes.
Best views: Grünten and Sonnenköpfe
Sonthofen's landmark mountain is the 1738-meter Grünten, clearly recognizable by the transmission mast near the summit. The Grünten is also called the "guardian of the Allgäu". On the ascent from Burgberg, you will pass the Grüntenhaus, which was built as early as 1854 as the first mountain hotel in the region and is now a cozy place to stop for refreshments. From here, the route continues up to the Jägerdenkmal at the Grünten summit, where you can enjoy a unique panoramic view over the Allgäu Alps and towards the Bavarian foothills of the Alps.
To the southeast of Sonthofen stretches the mountain range of the Sonnenköpfe. A beautiful circular hiking trail leads to the grassy peaks of Sonnenkopf, Heidelbeerkopf and Schnippenkopf, but requires a good level of fitness.
Even without climbing the summits, you can explore the typical Allgäu nature while hiking. For example, on the popular route to the Sonthofer and Altstädter Hof, where you can enjoy the magnificent view with a leisurely snack at two huts. Children are also welcome here!
