Due to its central location in the Sächsisch-Böhmische Schweiz region, Sebnitz is an absolute insider's tip when it comes to hiking trails. The national park is one of the most beautiful in Europe and attracts visitors with its impressive rock formations and idyllic forests. You don't necessarily have to be a professional to go hiking here. The variety of hiking tours offers you the opportunity to explore both easy trails and challenging tours. You can also take a historic boat trip on the Kirnitzsch River. Especially in summer, the trip through the rocky formations on the riverbank offers refreshment from the heat.
.But it is not only the well-developed network of hiking trails that is a highlight, but also the town of Sebnitz itself. The town has existed since the 13th century and offers many beautiful places to admire. Sebnitz is also known as the town of silk flowers, because artificial flowers are still made there by hand. At the Schaumanufaktur Deutsche Kunstblume (German Artificial Flower Foam Factory), you have the opportunity to get to know this craft better, and if you like, you can try your hand at „flowering“ yourself.
Leisurely hikes for beginners
If you fancy an easy hike, you don't have to do without remarkable panoramas and views. On the circular hike around Bad Schandau, you will experience the region's highlights again and again over a distance of just under 8 kilometres. For example, the loop takes you through the spectacular Dorfbachklamm gorge. The small gorge with its towering sandstone walls seems almost fairytale-like. The panorama path above Bad Schandau offers you wonderful views and, on a clear day, even a glimpse or two of the surrounding mountains. Don't miss the small tower with the viewing platform of the Schomberg castle ruins on your hike.
Tip: Children and those who are free from giddiness should also visit the Bad Schandau climbing garden on the circular route and test their skills there.
Varied full-day tours
A variety of all-day hikes are also on offer around Sebnitz. If you have great stamina, grab your rucksack and hiking boots and set off to explore the rocky nature of Sächsische Schweiz.
For example, a seven-hour tour with many scenic and historical highlights will take you through the heart of the Upper Sächsische Schweiz. The ascent to Winterstein or the Hinteres Raubschloss is not for beginners, but it is definitely worth it. Once you have made the ascent, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view and will probably also understand why the former castle was once able to defend itself so steadfastly against enemies. The descent through the Wilde Hölle is also demanding, but no less impressive.
Other highlights of the Sächsische Schweiz are the unspoilt hiking trails around the Idagrotte and the various sandstone cave formations. It is also interesting to note that the Blocktrümmerhöhle at Satanskopf served as a shelter and leaflet printing plant during the Nazi regime. You will not only pass by natural spectacles, but also stand in the middle of a piece of history.
