Hikes in Meraner Land

The spa town of Merano delights its guests with a mixture of Alpine and Mediterranean flair. And that is precisely what is reflected in the hikes in the Merano region: while pleasure hikers stroll among vineyards and blossoming apple trees high above the city, summit strikers are drawn to the mountains of the Sarntal Alps and the Texel Group. The Waal trails, meanwhile, lead along the traces of water and offer magnificent views over the Etschtal valley.

Hikes with a high enjoyment factor

Merano is a popular starting point for varied hiking tours, a wide range of leisure activities for the whole family and unforgettable excursions into the magnificent mountains of South Tyrol. During your hikes you will not only experience magnificent mountain panoramas and discover breathtaking natural spectacles. The charming spa town is also a true Eldorado for connoisseurs.

The region offers you countless opportunities to enjoy the excellent culinary specialities of South Tyrolean and Italian cuisine between hikes. Cosy trattorias, historic country inns and rustic mountain huts along the hiking trails invite you to feast and enjoy. The wines of the region are also considered excellent. The best way to convince yourself of this is to take a walk through the vineyards of the region and stop for a drink at one of the many winegrowers' establishments.

Alpine pasture hike on the Hirzer

This beautiful hiking tour takes you to a number of alpine pastures, such as the Pfandler Alm or the Hinteregg Alm, although there are a few climbs to contend with. In return, you will be rewarded with wonderful views and fantastic mountain panoramas while hiking on one of the moderately difficult hiking trails around Merano. And of course this tour also offers plenty of opportunities for leisurely snack breaks.

Tip: At the end of the hike, it is worth stopping off at the historic Sandwirt. The cosy inn in the Passeier Valley serves traditional South Tyrolean specialities. How about a portion of hearty South Tyrolean bacon, Tyrolean dumplings or sweet Passeirer Krapfen and Apfelkiachel?

Hiking on the Merano High Altitude Trail

If you are travelling in the Merano region and are in good shape, you should definitely not miss out on hiking the Merano Hills Trail. The hiking trail leads from Merano through the Texel Group Nature Park in 5 to 7 stages. The Merano Hills Trail has been open to hikers since 1985. Since then, the route has changed in some places, but you can still experience the wonderful views and the beautiful nature of South Tyrol.

How difficult is the Merano High Altitude Trail?

On the Merano High Altitude Trail you will climb to peaks of up to 3,000 meters above sea level. If you want to hike the entire loop, you should not only be in good shape, but also sure-footed, have a head for heights and experience in hiking. The difficulty varies depending on the stage. The good signposting as well as the many huts and alpine pastures ensure stress-free planning and a relaxed hike.

Hike to the ancient settlement and cult site of St. Hippolytus

If you are interested in ancient history, then this hike is worthwhile, during which you can dive deep into the past of the Merano region. This easy and relatively short tour takes you to an ancient sanctuary with a beautiful little church. Here you will discover ancient witnesses of the earliest settlements in the region, as well as mysterious rock paintings and mysterious stone formations. A nice place to rest is the picturesque pond at the church hill. Here you can enjoy a picnic and the wonderful view over the idyllic Adige valley with its impressive castles and ruins.

Tip: At the circular hiking trail is the St. Hippolyt climbing garden. On the versatile climbing wall you can try your hand at climbing and scrambling at various levels of difficulty. As it is well secured, it is also worth a visit with the whole family.

Leisure pleasures in the Merano region

Also away from the picturesque hiking trails, the alpine region offers many possibilities for active leisure activities. From Easter until well into autumn, you can go cycling, climbing or mountain biking in addition to hiking. There are also numerous trails for walking or jogging.

The impressive botanical gardens of Merano are also worth a visit. More than 80 wonderfully landscaped gardens from all over the world await you here. In addition, you can try out countless chilli plants of different pungencies on the "hot trail", marvel at the botanical underworld or observe exotic bird species in the walk-in bird aviary.
