Adventurous hiking trails in Carinthia

In the sunny south of Austria, Carinthia awaits you with wonderful conditions and a varied selection for impressive hiking tours - a paradise for hikers. Gentle plains, low mountain pasture landscapes, but also challenging hiking trails up the Großglockner make you want to have an adventure in Carinthia's unique nature. In the Hohe Tauern National Park there is not only the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain, to marvel at, but also a diverse flora and fauna below the mountain peaks.

The Hohe Tauern National Park is a popular destination for hikers. When you go hiking in the National Park, you will definitely come into contact with water, be it an idyllic mountain lake, a wild mountain stream, a glacier or a roaring waterfall. Numerous tours, ranging from easy to medium to difficult and from short to long distances, will bring you to the wild water.

But hikes on the themed trails of the Hohe Tauern are also worth seeing and interesting. The Almkräuter-Lehrpfad (Alpine Herb Trail) conveys ancient knowledge about the healing properties and use of herbs and how to recognise them on a hiking trail across the alpine pastures. Or you can discover the Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier at the foot of the Großglockner, and the Block Glacier on a hike. Here you will get a taste of varied experiences.

If you are looking for a longer adventure, the long-distance hiking trail Alpe-Adria-Trail is just right for you. The trail leads from the Großglockner in Carinthia to Muggia on the Adriatic Sea.

The trail connects the three countries of Austria, Slovenia and Italy. It stands for pleasurable hiking and offers you a good opportunity to discover the surroundings in a new way, to strengthen your love and awareness for nature and to find yourself. For the most part, you will not be in alpine areas. Signposted hiking trails provide good orientation.

The Tauern Heights Trail also takes you on an experience lasting several days. You hike a total of six days on the high-altitude trail along the main ridge of the Tauern. With the Hocharn, you will cross the summit of a three-thousand-metre peak. It is a demanding, long and high-alpine hike that should only be undertaken by experienced hikers.

The Nockberge Biosphere Park stretches over parts of Carinthia with peaks up to almost 2500 metres. The diverse landscape in the Nockberge mountains is characterised by an idyllic mountain world, the most beautiful bathing lakes and alpine pastures. You will also discover a diverse flora and fauna - especially the medicinal plant Speik with its tangy and spicy scent stands out. It belongs to the genus of valerians and is popular for its calming effect. It flowers from July to September.

If you want to experience a natural landscape far away from mass tourism, the Rosental region is the right place for you. In the heart of the Karawanken, a varied nature awaits you. From easy hiking trails to challenging mountain tours, everyone gets their money's worth here.

The best hiking tours to the lakes of Carinthia

But it is not only high mountains that characterise the landscape of Carinthia. The region also has numerous beautiful lakes to offer. Some of the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps await hikers, water sports enthusiasts, families and those seeking relaxation. At Lake Wörthersee, Lake Millstätter See, Lake Weissensee, Lake Pressegger See or Lake Ossiach you will immediately get into the holiday mood.

  • Lake Wörthersee is the largest lake in Carinthia and will enchant you with its turquoise blue water. On a circular hike you will be on your way around the lake in several stages. The tour, which lasts several days and covers around 1400 m of altitude and almost 55 km, is varied and can be hiked almost all year round.
  • Lake Millstätter See is also a popular destination. There you can take a beautiful hike around the lake or start hiking tours directly into the mountains. A varied natural landscape with colourful flower meadows, crystal-clear water and a unique mountain panorama awaits you. A popular sight is the Granattor, a passage on the ridge of the Millstätter Alpe. From there you have a breathtaking view of the lake.
  • Water fun and mountains can also be ideally combined at Lake Pressegg. You can take a tour around the lake, but we also recommend a hiking tour to the Zuchengraben waterfall or through green forests to the Khünburg ruins, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the lake.
  • With its crystal-clear water, Lake Weissensee makes you feel like you're on holiday. The lake is surrounded by a breathtaking mountain scenery that invites you to go hiking. Once you reach the top, you will experience a magnificent view.
