Jura Mountains

The French and Swiss Jura Mountains extend in a crescent-shaped arc along the border between the two countries. Situated northwest of the Alpine ridge, the Jura mountains are bordered by the Swiss Mittelland, the Upper Rhine Plain, the Burgundy Gate, the Rhône-Saône depression and the Isère and Chartreuse rivers. The majority of the Jura lies in French territory. The mountain range consists of fold and table Jura and is particularly popular with hikers and winter sports enthusiasts.

The Jura mountain range offers fantastic views from its ridges, which extend over the Swiss midlands to the Alps. Natural attractions such as caves, springs, cauldrons and gorges attract nature lovers. Outdoor sports enthusiasts like it for its amazing hiking network and winter activities. The Jura High Trail runs along the entire Swiss part of the Jura arc and the Grande Traversée du Jura covers the French part for hikers. Winter sports enthusiasts enjoy cross-country skiing trails and snowshoe routes, but alpine skiing is also possible in the Jura. The mountains are an insider tip for cyclists. The plateaus are flat and, therefore, ideal for cycling. The Jura Route runs between Basel and Nyon for about 277 km. The vertical rock faces of the mountains are also predestined for climbing.
