Geologically and scenically unique destination
Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark is one of the UNESCO Global Geoparks. The natural landscape of the area consists of various formations shaped by natural forces as well as interesting natural sites that have evolved over hundreds of millions of years. Rokua Geopark highlights the area’s exceptional geological heritage, especially in terms of the impact of the ice age.
In the area consisting of the valley of Oulujoki river, Rokua region and Lake Oulujärvi, you can admire the landscapes with dunes, marshlands, hills, and rivers as well as the areas shaped by the continental glacier. The landscape of the Oulunjoki valley is characterized by deep river canyons and fast-flowing rapids. The Rokua region is filled with rolling hills, crystal-clear ponds, white lichen-covered forest ground, and magnificent dune areas. By Lake Oulujärvi, you can marvel at the vast waters and the numerous islands that continue to the horizon.
The place to be for hikers

Rokua Geopark has a comprehensive network of outdoor trails that allow activities all year round, whether it is hiking in the hilly landscapes and river valleys or enjoying the morning sun by the shimmering lake.
The hiking trails are suitable for both novice and experienced hikers. In Rokua Geopark, you will also find routes suitable for people with reduced mobility and for baby carriages. Some of the routes are themed nature trails, along which you can learn more about local nature, culture, and geology. Because Rokua Geopark is a treasury of natural delicacies, you can also combine berry picking and mushroom picking with hiking.
You can also explore Rokua Geopark on a canoe or a kayak. Great sites for water activities are found in Montta and Vaalankurkku by the Oulujoki River, on the ponds of Rokua, and in Oulujärvi Hiking Area. Along the waterways, there are sheltered campfire sites and lean-to shelters for overnight stays.
It is possible to engage in activities in the area both independently and with a guide. Those looking for guided activities will find guided tours and rental equipment for nature activities all year round from the numerous entrepreneurs in the area.

Hundreds of kilometres of winter magic
Because the winter trail network follows the snow-free hiking trails, Rokua Geopark has hundreds of kilometres of cross-country skiing trails which offer a wide range of routes for both relaxed skiers and fitness enthusiasts.
Along the way, you can stop and enjoy snacks at various campfire sites. For longer excursions, skiers can stay at one of the area’s lean-to shelters. You can also stay at Rokua Health Spa or Rokuanhovi accommodation with a direct access to the cross-country skiing trails. Those who are enthusiastic about long-distance cross-country skiing should especially head to the trails leading to Pookivaara, Saarinen, or Kirvesjärvi.
In addition to cross-country skiing, you can explore the wintertime Rokua Geopark on snowshoes. Snowshoeing is a fun and easy way to explore winter nature. Enjoying the silence of the forest and admiring the winter scenery is also possible on snowshoe safaris organized by entrepreneurs in the area – a fun and active alternative to a recreational day.
