Muntenia

Muntenia (Wallachia) can be a region full of contrasts in terms of outdoor activities. Your local adventure takes you from the highest mountain peak in Romania to the most popular alpine plateaus and ski slopes, then descends on beautiful hills that are perfect for cycling, passes by the most famous vineyards in the country, and stops on the sun-drenched roads on the banks of the Danube. Three cities in the region were, at one time, the capital of the region, alongside Bucharest - today's capital and Romania's most famous urban center.

Discover the most beautiful places in Southern Romania

Backpacking or cycling between the mountains and the sea

Hiking and skiing are probably the main outdoor tourist engine in Southern Romania. The famous Romanian mountains Bucegi and Făgăraș stand at the northern border of the region. Rail and road connections to these mountains are numerous, which results in the overcrowding of the roads and mountain resorts in any season.

Probably the most lively mountain resorts in Romania are located in the Prahova Valley. Resorts such as Sinaia and Busteni are hotspots both for those who love mountain trails and for those looking for bike trails or scenic roads.

Moldoveanu Peak - the highest peak in the country - is not necessarily easy to reach. But that doesn't stop hundreds of hikers from choosing the shortest hiking route to the top - via Valea Rea; this is also one of the popular one-day tours in the Fagaras Mountains. For less crowded hiking trails, try the accessible, but less touristic routes in Iezer-Păpușa, Grohotiș Mountains or in the truly unknown Buzău Mountains.

For cyclists, both the sub-mountain hills and some alpine plateaus can make up for challenging bike tours. The Transbucegi Road takes you up to the mountain plateau relatively quickly but requires great effort. Although the Transylvanian part of the Transfăgărășan road is the most famous side, the part in Argeș County is similarly stunning and can also be “conquered” on two wheels. On the other side, bike riding through Southern Romania along the Danube takes you straight to the sea. It involves a little effort but you'll get a refreshing swim.

The Dealu Mare Vineyard area in Prahova County is one of the most famous in Romania. The small wineries between Ploiești and Buzău offer guided tours with tastings included. Tourism in the area is more popular in autumn when the grapes are harvested.

But a bike ride on the county roads between Urlați and Zorești is delightful in any season; you will pass by hills with vineyards and fruit trees, and villages with small houses.

Discover the Land of Buzău Geopark

The Land of Buzău Geopark was born at the initiative of some people in love with the sub-Carpathian area in Buzău County. Their aim is to promote and support the region through sustainable tourism. The Geopark is a rural area on the outside of the Subcarpathians, and also one of the wildest places in Europe with its rich biodiversity. The Geopark includes some well-known natural attractions such as muddy volcanoes, amber sites, salt hills, eternal fires, cave settlements, and an extremely picturesque rural landscape. The main problem here is poor infrastructure. So exploring the area by bike might be the best choice, even if the roads are not marked for cycle tourism.
