La Gomera: the wild Canary Island
La Gomera, like the other Canary archipelagos, is of volcanic origin. Despite its small surface area, visitors will find a wide variety of terrain, ranging from humid foggy jungles in the central highlands to rocky, barren coastal regions. This is also accompanied by marked differences in temperature.
The island is surrounded by a variety of vegetation.
The island is characterised by jagged rocky gorges, with steep cliffs rising from the sea in many places along the coast. Unlike its neighbouring island Tenerife, La Gomera is not only a sought-after beach holiday destination, but is particularly popular with outdoor travellers.
La Gomera offers numerous hiking and mountain biking tours. For water enthusiasts, there are several diving schools as well as catamaran and dolphin cruises, in addition to bathing bays.
La Gomera attracts many hikers and mountain bikers.

Leisure on La Gomera: Excursion tips from the beach to the island centre
La Gomera offers a wide range of excursion destinations. In terms of landscape, the island impresses with a high degree of variety, but the island towns are also worth exploring. The municipality of Hermigua is perfect for fishing. You can also go on a forest hike, „El Cedro“, and on the beach „La Caleta“ you can relax wonderfully in the sun. The municipality of Agulo offers the Mirador Abrante viewpoint with an impressive glass access bridge, the Fiestas de San Marcos and the beautiful old part of the town with its church.
In addition, there are many bars and restaurants offering local specialities. Restaurante El Pajarito, located directly on the sea promenade of San Sebastián de La Gomera, attracts visitors with its large terrace and view of the sea. The menu is mainly focused on fish and shellfish, as well as squid “a la gallega” (Galician style)
.A special experience is a boat trip to watch whales or dolphins. More than 20 species of sea creatures live in the waters around La Gomera. The clear water, the moderate temperatures and the abundance of food favour the living conditions of spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, rough-toothed dolphins, fin whales, sperm whales, pilot whales and sea turtles.
On a boat tour, visitors can discover the animals almost every day. Several operators offer excursions and depart from Vueltas, Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago or San Sebastián de La Gomera. If the boats sail under the blue flag, they adhere to the applicable standards for sustainable whale and dolphin watching. And also the excursionists have to abide by certain rules. It is not allowed to swim with the animals, to feed them or to touch them. Furthermore, it is forbidden to throw objects or waste into the sea and to pollute the animals with litter.
