La Gomera: the wild Canary Island

La Gomera, like the other Canary archipelagos, is of volcanic origin. Despite its small surface area, visitors will find a wide variety of terrain, ranging from humid foggy jungles in the central highlands to rocky, barren coastal regions. This is also accompanied by marked differences in temperature.

The island is surrounded by a variety of vegetation.

The island is characterised by jagged rocky gorges, with steep cliffs rising from the sea in many places along the coast. Unlike its neighbouring island Tenerife, La Gomera is not only a sought-after beach holiday destination, but is particularly popular with outdoor travellers.

La Gomera offers numerous hiking and mountain biking tours. For water enthusiasts, there are several diving schools as well as catamaran and dolphin cruises, in addition to bathing bays.

La Gomera attracts many hikers and mountain bikers.

What hiking tours does La Gomera offer?

La Gomera offers its visitors above all a nature experience. The island has long been known for its hiking trails. Although the highest point of the relatively small island (369 km²) is only 1487 m, the trails are no less varied and offer a challenge or two.

Mountaineering on La Gomera

Mountain tours on La Gomera are particularly varied. The barren rocks rise imposingly from the lush green landscapes. With the deep blue sea in view, the paths wind through imposing rocks, past gorges and waterfalls. With a little luck, you may even see dolphins, whales or sea turtles off the coast.

Accommodation on La Gomera: cosy, idyllic and hospitable

Most of the accommodation on La Gomera is in well-equipped flats. Otherwise, you will find hotels and guesthouses in all the island's towns. Fincas are more conveniently located, but you should book them in advance. Thus, there is something for every taste among the accommodations on La Gomera.

Leisure on La Gomera: Excursion tips from the beach to the island centre

La Gomera offers a wide range of excursion destinations. In terms of landscape, the island impresses with a high degree of variety, but the island towns are also worth exploring. The municipality of Hermigua is perfect for fishing. You can also go on a forest hike, „El Cedro“, and on the beach „La Caleta“ you can relax wonderfully in the sun. The municipality of Agulo offers the Mirador Abrante viewpoint with an impressive glass access bridge, the Fiestas de San Marcos and the beautiful old part of the town with its church.

In addition, there are many bars and restaurants offering local specialities. Restaurante El Pajarito, located directly on the sea promenade of San Sebastián de La Gomera, attracts visitors with its large terrace and view of the sea. The menu is mainly focused on fish and shellfish, as well as squid “a la gallega” (Galician style)

.
To the sights

A special experience is a boat trip to watch whales or dolphins. More than 20 species of sea creatures live in the waters around La Gomera. The clear water, the moderate temperatures and the abundance of food favour the living conditions of spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, rough-toothed dolphins, fin whales, sperm whales, pilot whales and sea turtles.

On a boat tour, visitors can discover the animals almost every day. Several operators offer excursions and depart from Vueltas, Valle Gran Rey, Playa Santiago or San Sebastián de La Gomera. If the boats sail under the blue flag, they adhere to the applicable standards for sustainable whale and dolphin watching. And also the excursionists have to abide by certain rules. It is not allowed to swim with the animals, to feed them or to touch them. Furthermore, it is forbidden to throw objects or waste into the sea and to pollute the animals with litter.

Agulo to Juego de Bolas La Gomera by Martin

The rock fall on the track back has resulted in it being taped off. However, it is easily passable by basic scrambling over the fallen boulders. The area in question is not a sheer drop, so even an inexperienced hiker could find it simple to negotiate. Don't be put off by the height and vertigo warnings. Please go around the way it is arrowed on here. Enjoy
