The river landscape of the Lower Austrian Danube region offers a unique backdrop for unforgettable hikes, bike tours and boat trips.

A particularly attractive route for nature and culture lovers is the one along the Nibelungengau long-distance hiking trail. On eight stages, it connects the Donausteig in Upper Austria with the Wachau World Heritage Trail in Lower Austria. Hikers encounter idyllic resting places, historic towns and villages, a picturesque gorge and numerous cultural sights in the Wachau World Heritage Site.

In the region of Roman Carnuntum, hikers can follow the footsteps of the ancient Romans on the VIA.CARNUNTUM. and dive deep into history.

The well-known Danube Cycle Path also runs through the varied region on both the north and south banks. The river can be crossed without any problems on cycle ferries and bridges. Impressive rock faces are just as much a part of the scenery here as ancient ruins, inviting bathing lakes, intact riparian forests and charming lakeside towns, which entice you to take a well-deserved break with a wide range of culinary specialities of the region and overnight accommodation.

The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe and the most important waterway in Austria. A stretch of around 260 km belongs to the Lower Austrian Danube region. The fertile region stretches from the legendary Nibelungengau in the west to the World Heritage Site Wachau and the gates of Bratislava in the east. People and nature have always been shaped by the course of the Danube. Extensive vineyards and orchards, villages rich in history, impressive primary rock terraces and pristine floodplain forests, such as those in the Danube Floodplain National Park, have developed along its banks.

The Lower Austrian Danube region is a particularly fertile area thanks to its loess-rich soils and mild climate. Sweet and juicy apricots and crisp asparagus are among the specialities of the region. The high-quality wines that thrive here are also well-known. Cosy inns, rustic wine taverns and exquisite gourmet restaurants are ideal places to enjoy the excellent regional products in an authentic atmosphere.
