Alta Badia

In the middle of the heart of the Dolomites, embedded in a sunny basin and framed by high mountains, lies the Alta Badia region. The home of the Ladin language scores with South Tyrolean tradition and culture, Italian flair and almost endless hiking and climbing opportunities. The region consists of the six towns of Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, Badia, San Cassiano and La Val.

The Alta Badia region is located in the southern part of the Val Badia, which branches off from the Puster Valley near St.Lorenzen, in the heart of the Dolomites, which the famous architect Le Corbusier described as "the most beautiful architecture in the world". Far away from the stress of the big cities, in the villages of Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia and La Val, we will find just the right range of hiking trails, high-altitude trails in the Dolomites or climbing tours. With more than 400 km of hiking trails, Alta Badia is a hiking paradise in the Dolomites. Cyclists and bikers will also find a large selection of bike tours, trails and mountain passes. In winter Alta Badia is part of the Dolomiti Superski ski area, one of the largest and most varied ski areas in the world.

Saus dl altonn

Located in the southern part of the Val Badia, a side valley of the Puster Valley, the area impresses with its immense cultural wealth and the breathtaking natural landscape of the Dolomites, which the famous architect Le Corbusier described as "the most beautiful natural architecture in the world". The Dolomites, also known as the “pale mountains”, are made of limestone. A very special experience is the alpenglow, called "Enrosadira" in Ladin. Then the mountains around Alta Badia glow in all shades of red. For example, the Heiligkreuzkofel, in front of which the hospice of the same name stands, offers a unique spectacle of colors and lights in the evening hours.

Ladinisch – die Sprache des Gadertals

A specialty in Val Badia is the language. The Rhaeto-Romanic language of Ladin is still spoken here - one of the three South Tyrolean national languages. Since the Gadertal was difficult to reach due to its geographical location until the beginning of the 19th century, the language, tradition and culture are deeply rooted to this day.

Challenging via ferratas in Alta Badia

The Dolomites are a magical attraction for climbers. No wonder, as the vertical rock faces and steep towers are peppered with numerous via ferratas, climbing tours and climbing gardens. Alta Badia is a climbing Eldorado and is ideal for both beginners and experienced climbers. The Pisciadú via ferrata is one of the most famous via ferratas in the Dolomites. The route in the Sella Group offers vertical passages and a suspension bridge and is reserved for experienced mountaineers.

The huts of Alta Badia

The mountain huts of Alta Badia are located in the middle of the breathtaking scenery of the Dolomites and are the starting point for tired hikers and climbers to rest and enjoy the fantastic view with a traditional Ladin meal. The cozy huts have become an important part of the local gastronomy in the last few decades and offer mainly Ladin and South Tyrolean cuisine. In the often rustic huts you can soak up the cozy mountain atmosphere.

Out and about on the high trails in the Fanes-Senes-Braies nature park

The Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, which extends between the Pustertal, Gadertal, the South Tyrolean border and the Höllenstein Valley, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rightly so, because nature impresses with a varied landscape in various colors. In the Alta Badias nature park area you will find the Armentara meadows with their biodiversity, the Conturines cave - the highest bear cave in the world - and the Fanes high alpine pasture with the stone amphitheater "Parliament of the marmots".

4-Peaks-Challenge

For experienced mountaineers, the Dolomites offer numerous adventurous paths. Those looking for a challenge can set out to climb the peaks of Heiligkreuzkofel, Zehnerspitze, Lavarela and Conturines. The 4-Peaks Challenge challenges hikers with four three-thousand-meter peaks, 2000 m altitude difference and some exposed, unsecured sections. Those who manage the tour in one day can call themselves Alta Badia Mountaineer. Simply register for the tour, pick up the starter set, select a day for the ascent and pick up a stamp at the checkpoints on the four peaks. If you want to take two or more days for the challenge, you can call yourself Alta Badia Finisher afterwards. A light version of the route is also possible: longer, but without the exposed section.

The Dolomite high-altitude trails run through the nature park, hiking routes lasting several days, which allow nature lovers to explore the unique world of the Dolomites, to experience the alpine hut flair and the magic of the mountain nights. The Dolomitenhöhenweg 2 leads from Brixen in South Tyrol over 185 km and 11,000 meters in altitude to the small town of Feltre in Veneto. The route is also known as the “Höhenweg der Legenden” (Höhenweg der Legenden), requires a good level of fitness and some climbing technique and can be done in a good two weeks. On the high trail, hikers cross the provinces of Bolzano, Trient and Belluno as well as ten mountain groups and also pass historical evidence from the First World War.
