On the way in West Lithuania and at the Baltic Sea
Experienced cyclists will probably not get tired in Lithuania – the country is small and flat. So much the better for leisurely cyclists. On a cycling tour you are active and can get to know the country better. Whether alone, in good company or with a guide who knows the area – on two wheels you can get to places that are not accessible by car. The nature in Lithuania is varied, from green meadows with small hills to dense forests and wide moorlands. In between you will discover old hill forts and lookout towers – the view sweeps far across the flat country. Numerous lakes spread like blue splashes of color in the green of the forests and meadows and invite you to take leisurely round trips.

In the far west is the Baltic Sea. You can drive 100 km along the coast and explore the Samogitia region (lit. Žemaitija) of Lower Lithuania. The region is considered one of the most authentic in the whole country. The Samogitians were the last European pagans to be converted to Christianity. On a bicycle tour through the region, you will discover numerous sites of the old faith, but also traces of the Cold War – a museum is located at Lake Plateliai.

UNESCO World Heritage Curonian Spit
98 km long, at its narrowest point only 380 m wide, the Curonian Spit was formed during the last ice age. The narrow headland separates the lagoon from the Baltic Sea, forms an ideal basin for fishermen and is especially popular with tourists. A legend tells the formation by a giantess, after whom the spit is also named. 52 km of the headland belong to Lithuania, the other 46 km to Kaliningrad in Russia. Since the 1990s, the Curonian Spit has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the natural landscape is protected in a national park: kilometers of sandy beaches, spectacularly high dunes, dark pine forests and colorfully painted wooden houses in between.

By bike to the capitals
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is a great city for cyclists. Almost the whole city is equipped with good cycle paths, which are separated from the streets by beautiful green areas. The old town is also great to explore by bike – you can see more than on foot and, unlike by car, you can get everywhere. There is of course a lot to see here, so you often have to leave your bike off to explore the architectural and cultural monuments, museums and galleries. A bike-sharing system makes it easier to explore the most important sites on two wheels.

In less than 30 minutes you can get out of the city into nature from anywhere in Vilnius, leave the hustle and bustle behind and visit the two former capitals of Lithuania on a bike tour. The island castle of Trakai is located in the land of lakes – almost 200 are scattered throughout the region and some of them border directly on the city like the beautiful lake Galvė. Its shores are characterized by numerous bays and the water is littered with 21 islands – a great destination for a trip. Even further west lies Kaunas, which is being embellished with a growing network of paths for cyclists. Here you can discover the interwar architecture and enjoy the panoramic views of Nemunas and Neris.
