Basic knowledge about trails
Cross-country ski trails are created with special snow groomers or tracking equipment that first loosen the snow and then bring it into the desired shape. The snow height should be at least 20 cm before a track can be prepared.
A classic cross-country ski trail consists of two hard pressed parallel grooves that give the skis a track. A skating trail is a wide, rolled piste. Many trails offer one or two lanes for classic cross-country skiers and one slope for skaters next to each other.
Tracks are marked with blue (light), red (medium) and black (heavy) signs according to the DIN 32912 standard. The classification also distinguishes between valley trails and high-altitude trails, which are considered to be particularly snow-sure. In any case it is worth having a look at the current trail report before you start.
Beginners often find particularly short, flat and wide cross-country trails in winter sports resorts. If you are looking for a special type of experience, you can try illuminated night cross-country trails, on which you can run after dark without any problems.
You don't necessarily need a cross-country ski run: If you like to enjoy the untouched winter landscape and don't want to break any speed records, you might as well go off the beaten track.
