Did you know? Columbia's roots are in Germany, more precisely in Augsburg, Bavaria.
In 1938 a German immigrant family founded one of the largest outdoor companies in the world (at that time still called Columbia Hat Company) in Portland, Oregon. Gertrude (Gert), 14 years old at the time of the emigration, was the boss of the company with about 8,000 employees worldwide until her death at the end of 2019. Even at the age of 95, she still visited her office regularly.
Even today the Columbia Sportswear Company is still family-run. Gert's son Tim Boyle is now its president.
Over the past decades, Columbia has specialized in innovative and technical outdoor clothing, footwear, equipment and accessories.
