Bicycle tours in Lower Austria

The Danube Cycle Route takes us in eight days from the three-river city of Passau to the Austrian capital Vienna, for which we should take an extra day. Plenty of cultural and geological highlights await us along the way.

Cycling like in PaRADies - from one thermal spa to the next. A pleasure tour from spa to spa in the thermal and volcanic country of Styria - cycling can hardly be more beautiful.

This section of the EuroVelo 9 runs alongside meadows and fields. Always in focus: the Viennese Alpine range.  A cycle path with a gentle incline running through the Bucklige Welt up to Mönichkirchen.

EuroVelo 9 is part of the European network of long-distance cycling routes. It links the Baltic coast in Poland with the Adriatic Sea in Croatia, covering 1,930 km. It runs straight through the heart of Central and Eastern Europe: travelling right across Poland from Gdansk, then through the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovenia, all the way to Pula in Croatia. Here we introduce the completed section from Breclav in the Czech Republic to Maribor in Slovenia: a tour of pure indulgence through wine regions, and connecting thermal spas, through the city of Vienna and the state of Styria until finally reaching Maribor in Slovenia.

An enjoyable bicycle ride through the Valley of the poets (Ferdinand Raimund), and that of the musicians (Johannes Brahms) and the painters Friedrich Gauermann and Leopold Kuppelwieser which leads from Markt Piesting to Gutenstein. Some info-pavilions along the route provide insight into the time of the Biedermeiers, which was from 1815 to 1848. The exhibition in the Waldbauern Museum in Gutenstein revives the Biedermeier in the Piestingtal (valley).

From the foot of the Melk Abbey Rock through the Danube meadow, vineyards and apricot orchards via Spitz and Weißenkirchen in the Wachau valley to the blue church tower of Dürnstein and the plain of Loiben to Krems on the Danube.

From Grein, the most important town in the Strudengau to Persenbeug and through the Nibelungengau to Melk and further along the right bank of the Danube to Arnsdorf and by ferry to Spitz.

The Danube Cycle Route Passau Vienna runs through the Upper Danube Valley, the Eferding Basin, the Machland, the Strudengau, the Nibelungengau, the Wachau and the Tullnerfeld to the Vienna Gate.

From Krems on the Danube, always along the Danube past the Roman towns of Traismauer and Tulln and at the foot of the Augustinian canons' monastery of Klosterneuburg to St. Stephen's Square in Vienna.

From Spitz on the Danube it goes via St. Michael through the historic Thal Wachau communities to Dürnstein and in Stein on the Danube to Mautern, Traismauer and Tulln, all 3 cities with strong Roman roots.
