Explore nature in Helsinki Region! In Mustijoki River Valley, you’ll be cycling in picturesque rural milieus. In this tranquil environment, you can see how Finland is a clean and silent country. In Mustijoki River Valley you are practically in the heart of Finnish countryside only a short distance from services and Helsinki.

On this country road, it is easy to stop and  enjoy the surrounding Finnish nature. Breath in some of the cleanest air in the world. Listen to the sounds of nature. Even a moment, a five-minute pause in the forest does wonders to your health. There are studies to confirm what Finns have known for centuries!

Finland is the land of a thousand lakes. Also in Mustijoki River valley, you can enjoy water in a variety of ways. Several lakes along the route offer nice places to sit down and sooth your mind in the silence.  It is a good idea to enjoy a picnic lunch on the banks of the Mustijoki River. At the end of the tour, arriving at the Baltic Sea and Porvoo Old Town provide breathtaking moments.

In Mustijoki River Valley, you’ll see the view featuring cultivated fields, wooded landscapes and seaside scenery. Riding on a small winding country road, you may get hungry after a while. How about eating a fish that you caught and then prepared on an open fire?

You’ll find designated campfire sites with firewood along the route, and the surrounding lakes and rivers offer plenty of opportunities for fishing. Take your binoculars with you and climb up to the bird watching towers!

The colours of the fields vary from springtime brown to summer green and autumn yellow. May is early spring in Finland; the trees are still bare. In summer, July-August, Finns would stop to pick blueberries, later in autumn they would find lingonberries. You may also take a dip in a lake or cool your feet in the river. It is definitely a refreshing experience for the body and soul!

It's always interesting to see how locals live, isn't it? Some houses, the old ones dating back to the beginning of the 19th century, are former small rental houses, tiny little cottages. Recently built houses are bigger, most often surrounded by lovely gardens. In addition, this region close to Helsinki features a variety of magnificent, privately owned manor houses. Also, interestingly, the majority language changes from Finnish to Swedish reflecting phases of Finnish history.

Author's recommendation

The best time for cycling in Mustijoki River Valley is from May to October. The route follows a country road and the shoulder is quite narrow. We recommend taking three (3) days for the tour.

It’s a good idea to check opening hours of shops and visitor attractions in advance. Book accommodation and tickets beforehand! There are only a few accommodations and in summer they are in great demand.

Bring food and water with you; in the natural surroundings of the valley, shops and restaurants may be hard to find. Also, don’t forget to bring essentials for having meals outdoors: a knife, a mug/cup, water canteen or bottle, matches/ a lighter. There are designated campfire sites with firewood along the route.

Bring binoculars for bird watching. For fishing,  you’ll need a license if you are planning to do more than angling,  The license is available at most local country shops.

You may cycle freely on paths in the forest, except very near people's homes, or in fields and plantations which could easily be damaged. Also, you may pick wild berries, mushrooms and flowers, as long as they are not protected species. Please find more information about so called everyman's right below in details.
